
If Something Drains You, It's It's Misalignment; If It Fuels You , It's Your Path
To open 2026, I want to speak to the truth that has shaped every season of my leadership:
If it drains you, it’s misalignment.
If it fuels you, it’s your path.
There is a moment — usually quiet, usually inconvenient — where your body whispers something you don’t want to hear.
Not because it’s wrong.
But because it’s true.
It’s the moment when something you’ve been pushing to maintain
stops fuelling you… and starts draining you.
A relationship.
A role.
A Board dynamic.
A client.
A story about who you “need” to be.
Your body knows before your mind catches up.
That heaviness behind your ribs.
That tightness before a meeting.
That flattening after a conversation.
The drain isn’t failure.
It’s data.
What drains you is not aligned with you.
What fuels you is.
Governance likes to pretend we’re rational creatures making rational decisions.
But in truth, your energy tells the truth long before your words do.
The body as your first governance instrument
Long before risk registers flare red, dashboards dip, or delivery slips…
your energy has already registered:
“This isn’t it.”
“This is too much.”
“This is not mine to hold.”
“This dynamic is off.”
Most CEOs override that signal.
They’ve been conditioned to perform through misalignment:
to endure, absorb heat, keep the optics clean, carry more than their share.
But the drain is visible.
The misalignment leaks.
And Boards feel it before they name it.
Trust isn’t only built from results.
It’s built from how you show up under pressure.
Misalignment shows up in your behaviour as:
reactivity
defensiveness
overfunctioning and overexplaining
softening truths
speeding up, losing clarity
protecting yourself instead of leading
This is why energy matters in governance.
Not as something “soft”, but as the earliest performance signal.
When you’re in alignment, everything shifts
When you’re aligned, you:
speak clearly
decide without wobble
hold tension without theatre
deliver without burning yourself to the floorboards
You walk into a room and the room settles because you are settled.
You stop trying to prove.
You stop rescuing.
You stop absorbing what isn’t yours.
You stop betraying your own system to keep the peace.
Instead, you lead from:
Clarity.
Clean power.
Energetic integrity.
Behavioural discipline.
Truth without heat.
Boundaries without apology.
Alignment makes leadership sustainable.
Misalignment makes leadership survivable.
You deserve more than survival.
